Free Twitter Background Donation for a “Deserving” Organization

by bruce colthart on December 31, 2008

Detail from my Twitter page

Are you a non-profit, not-for-profit, charity, community organization or cause that desires more exposure, new outreach ideas and more networking opportunities? You may or may not be aware of so-called social media, where you have the opportunity to make your voice heard, reach new people, and learn from a larger community.

One such social media outlet, growing by huge numbers of new participants each day, is Twitter, the “microblogging” platform. Forgive me if you’re already an active and savvy user, but the truth is that many worthwhile organizations are not using it. To get started, there is nothing to download – just sign up with a catchy name, a brief profile, a password and join the conversation and meet new people.

The purpose of this post is not to delve into the details and benefits of Twitter. There are countless articles and blog posts about the benefits of Twitter, just as there are many online and offline applications that enhance your Twitter experience.

This post is to offer “visual branding” help to a deserving, Twitter-using organization. Once you create your Twitter account, you’re given a Twitter page where you’ll read and send messages from. That page comes with standard decorated background. But that background may be changed, customized and even replaced with an image. And the replacement image should not only be attractive, it should properly reflect your organization and contain key information. Here are some examples.

By using a savvy designer for your background, your Twitter page will visually compliment your other online outreach efforts and reflect your organization’s brand. Visitors to your page will see your brief profile in the upper right as well as whatever info you want to appear in the upper left [as part of the background image].

Now let’s cut to the chase.

I’m offering to create such a background, at no charge, for an organization that would appreciate the donation. Assuming more than one request will come in, I’ll need to choose who I can help, hence I will need a “pitch” from you describing your organization’s work, its goals and its plans.

To request this donation, leave a comment here with any relevant links (including your Twitter contact info – mine is http://twitter.com/bccreative) so I may understand you mission. My choice will be subjective, certainly. By the middle of January, I will have chosen which organization(s) I’d like to help and will contact you with questions and a time line.

Update / February 16, 2009:
I’m happy to announce that – tada! – Jamie Vijayaraghavan’s organization, Saving Sheltered Pets, now has a new Twitter background. Jamie is passionate about animals (read more here ) so I was happy to help her. Jamie’s also a designer, but luckily for me, she was happy to let me mess with her hard-earned reputation and brand equity. Thanks for trusting me Jamie!

Hey Bruce, cool idea! My local Greenville Jaycees could really use a professional logo, we’re getting everyone excitd about using social media and this would be a great boost for us! (shoot me an email and I’ll connect you with our director)

Thanks for your interest, Doug. Just to be clear, the offer is for Twitter background and not necessarily for a logo appearing on that background. A logo design is a project unto itself, and also has a life of it’s own beyond the Twitter background – print , display, other online transmissions…

Also, I see that usjaycees.org has marketing resources available for your chapter to use; is that not desirable?

Anyway, I’ll consider the request, but a) I’m hoping to choose from a few commenters, and b) I need to consider being even more specific about what’s included in my offer.

Again, thanks for you comment and your activism on behalf of your organization.

Hi Bruce! Saw your post on Twitter and thought I’d make my way to your blog and suggest my nonprofit. :)

I run an animal rescue called Saving Shelter Pets, Inc (www.savingshelterpets.com). I just got us up and running on Twitter about a month or 2 ago, and I’m looking forward to meeting many more animal lovers through this network. Here’s our page: http://www.twitter.com/sspets

Our nonprofit focuses on saving cats & dogs from high-kill shelters in Georgia. We also work with other rescues to help sponsor low-cost or free spay/neuter clinics across the US (currently in Georgia, Ohio, and Indiana).

I am hoping that we can come up with a Twitter background consistent with our current “look” which includes our logo (found on our website), a light blue & green theme, and photos of dogs/cats rescued through our organization.

I hope you deem our organization “worthy”, and we look forward to hopefully hearing from you soon! :)

Thank you Jamie for your request, and for the work your organization does on behalf of animals.

My dog Harry was rescued from a kill shelter (oxymoronic?!) in Virginia by a network that brought him here to NJ. We love people like you!

You’re right to throw that term (MY own term!) “deserving” back at me ;-) – clearly you need people to contribute to your efforts. And you also deserve to have your mission recognized for the good it does us all as humans.

True to my offer, I’ll be deciding soon on who I’ll help, but who am I, really, to say who’s more deserving?

I’ll stay in touch.

Jamie – I just realized you used your own word “worthy” and not my word “deserving” – but my sentiments are the same.

Hey Bruce –
Great idea and I’d love to take advantage of it. Still love what you did for my book cover. When are you going to update this old blog design? The shoemaker’s kids, etc….

Thanks for the vote of confidence Carol. Do you know any non-profits (versus non-prophets) who are twittering? I haven’t really tapped into that greater community too successfully… this time, anyway!

Yeah, I’m really ready for new blog design here. Being much less of a web designer than a print designer, I’m trying to evolve efficiently. Am considering blog themes to then modify.

Thanks for checking in!
