Birth of an Idiom… or is it Slang

patriotsm.gifNot a discussion of football here, but I should state I’m a New Englander by birth. While I’m no rabid sports fanatic, I like football enough to have cheered on the Pats for many years. But just in case your cave doesn’t have a cable connection, they, uh…lost. Big. In a game that was sorta important to their legacy as the only 18-and-0 team and the dominant pro franchise of the decade.

Anyway, I live in New Jersey, deep in NY sports territory. As it turns out the Giants are better than the near-perfect Patriots. Turns out too, that metro NY fans don’t like Boston much. While waiting for an oil change this morning, I heard on the radio that a new phrase was catching on rapidly in the area. Here was the example used: “I had a date with this nice guy, but it turns out that he lives with his mom…that is so eighteen-and-one!”

Okay, it may not be intellectually sparkling, but it’ll catch on around here. And it made me involuntarily slump and groan, just a little bit.

Apologies to all my friends who live with their parent(s), helping them with their everyday affairs… god bless you all.
